SUVA, Fiji Islands (September 4, 2002 - fijivillage.com/PINA Nius Online)---The Fiji government is concerned about the increasing number of squatter settlements in and near the country's cities and towns.

Housing Minister Mataiasi Ragigia said more than 66,000 squatters were identified in the last survey and the number is expected to increase.

Mr. Ragigia said the government is trying its best to provide water, proper roads and electricity to the squatter areas and move those that need to be resettled.

The government is also informing rural dwellers about the problems related to moving to urban areas, and settling on the land that does not belong to them, he said.
