MELBOURNE, Australia (September 13, 2002 – Radio Australia)---Coconuts may well be synonymous with life in the Pacific but when they fall on the unsuspecting below -- be they tourist or local -- significant injury can occur.

Now, an Australian inventor, Tim Straatmans, has designed a special net basket to catch the nuts as they fall.

He says the device, which is clipped to the coconut tree under the fronds, is proving to be hit with worried local councils and resort operators.

"Well, we've had a phenomenal interest in Australia, some in Fiji already -- Samoa and New Guinea.

"And in Hawai‘i; there's starting to be some interest over there," Mr. Straatmans says.

"There has not been yet a negative response to it in any fashion whatsoever," he adds.
