CANBERRA, Australia (September 19, 2002 – Radio New Zealand International)--- An assessment of Middle Eastern asylum seekers remaining in Australian built camps on Nauru and Manus Island, Papua New Guinea has found that 138 more are not legitimate refugees.

The Australian Department of Immigration reported that 130 of those most recently rejected are from Afghanistan, where the Taliban government was toppled earlier this year.

Forty-four more people have had their asylum applications accepted and more decisions are expected soon.

Last year, thousands of boat people, refused entry to Australia, were sent to Pacific island camps for processing.
