VANUATU SUPPORTS SELF DETERMINATION FOR WEST PAPUA

The Australia West Papua Association, Sydney congratulates the Vanuatu government for its support for the people of West Papua in their struggle for self determination. Vanuatu is pushing for West Papua to be put back on the decolonizing committee of the United Nations.

In response to a request by the West Papuan representative in Vanuatu, Mr. Andy Ayamiseba, the Prime Minister, The Right Honorable Edward Nipake Natapei, and Deputy Prime Minister Honorable Serge Rialuth Vohor of the Vanuatu Government have extended an invitation to West Papua to open a representative office in the country. This offer of support emphasizes the geographical position and Melanesian heritage of the West Papuan people who do not identify themselves with Indonesia.

The decision to support a representative office in Vanuatu follows the recent custom ceremony organized by the National Council of Chiefs (malfatumauri), which cemented the fraternal ties between the people of Vanuatu and the people of West Papua.

This new office will give the people of West Papua a greater voice in the Pacific region. The Pacific region is a crucial area for West Papua to gain support in their struggle for self determination. Other regions in the world will now pay more attention to West Papua when they see the Vanuatuan support for West Papua.

Vanuatu has taken a courageous step in supporting the West Papuan struggle and this office will allow the West Papuan people the opportunity to voice their longing for independence and to explain to the world their determination to achieve this aim in a peaceful way.
