HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Oct. 17, 2002 - SIBC/PINA Nius Online)---New Zealand will provide Sol$7 million toward the Solomon Islands government's public service redundancy program, the government Communications Division said.

The Communications Division said this follows a meeting in Wellington between Finance Minister Laurie Chan and New Zealand's Foreign Minister Phil Goff.

The statement said that New Zealand appreciated the Solomon Islands government's efforts under the National Economic Recovery Plan.

This includes slashing the size of the public service as the country tries to recover from an economic crisis following more than two years of ethnic conflict.

Chan said Goff told him that New Zealand is committed to working with the government in addressing law and order and fiscal situations which are critical to the nation's economic recovery.
