PARIS, France (Nov. 5, 2002 - PINA Nius Online)---French company Alcatel and Telecom Services Kiribati Limited have signed a multimillion Euros contract for the supply of the first digital cellular network in Kiribati.

This network is expected to be operational by the end of this year and will support more than 2,000 subscribers, an Alcatel news release said.

Coverage will initially be in Tarawa and Christmas, two of the most populated islands in Kiribati, it said.

Ieronimo Kienene, Telecom Services Kiribati chief executive, said Alcatel's strong local presence in the Pacific Islands was among factors for its selection.
