HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Radio Australia) - The National Disaster Council in the Solomon Islands is shipping more than 50 tons of rice to starving villagers on the weather coast.

A donation from Taiwan has paid for the rice and transportation services.

Disaster Council Director, Lotti Yates, says five volunteers from the council, and two volunteers from Solomon Islands Red Cross, are traveling with the shipment, and hope to start distributing rice on Wednesday.

The Red Cross has already made emergency relief shipments to the Weather Coast, distributing household goods and seeds for replanting of gardens.
