SOLOMON ISLANDS STRUGGLING WITH WEATHER COAST SHORTAGES

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Radio Australia) - The Solomon Islands’ National Disaster Council says it is struggling to cope with chronic shortages in the Weather Coast region of Guadalcanal.

Council officials say torrential rain and tight security surrounding the hunt for rebel leader Harold Keke have contributed to a chronic shortage of food and medical services in the area.

The Council recently completed an assessment of the area and found an alarming rise in illness in a number of villages.

Council Chairman Caspar Fah Asala says many innocent bystanders are becoming casualties of the hunt for Keke.
