SUVA, Fiji (Pacific Media Watch, Dec. 24) – Some prominent Asian businessmen are under surveillance by police for allegedly operating a theft ring.

Police spokesperson Unaisi Vuniwaqa said police are investigating.

Vuniwaqa says she could not release further details until a proper investigation had been carried out.

The matter came to light after some homes were burglarized. Police so far have managed to establish that the "ring" operates with young boys who carry out robberies and sell the stolen property to Asian businessmen.

These stolen goods are then sold for double the price.

Police have also stepped up investigations on Asian women who are allegedly prostitutes and operate from a nightclub named Splash Scandals Nightclub located in Flagstaff, Suva.

Police have received complaints from some patrons that only Asians are allowed to enter some parts of the nightclub.

A patron who tried entering a backroom of a nightclub was rudely thrown out and told it was only for "special people".

The patron said he got curious and stayed in the background for a little while longer.

He was surprised to see Asian women and Asian men entering separately and leaving together in pairs.
