SOLOMONS COPRA WORKERS ATTACK COMPANY OFFICE

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC/PINA, Jan. 5) - International Comtrade Shipping Limited, touted as one of hopes for the revival of the Solomon Islands copra industry, is running into problems.

Its office at Yandina in the Russell Islands has been attacked and damaged by frustrated workers, according to reports reaching Honiara.

A worker at Yandina, Joseph Tau, said more than 20 workers went to the office and started destroying it as a result of failed promises by the company to pay them.

The manager of the company, John Whiteside, and public relations officer Patteson Mae sought refuge at the police station in Yandina. Their families sought refuge with the Church of Melanesia brothers.

International Comtrade Shipping Limited had promised to settle all workers’ outstanding wages and other entitlements when it was given the right to take over the former Russell Islands Plantations Limited.
