MARIANAS SPEAKER: WE’RE DOING OUR BEST

SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, Jan. 21) - It took the administration over a year to finally acknowledge the extent of the government’s financial crisis, but the more important thing now is that the governor and the Legislature are finally addressing these fiscal problems, according to Speaker Heinz S. Hofschneider, R-Saipan.

"We are trying to do something about it no matter how late in the day," he said. "This is not in defense of the governor, but we have to give respect to the administration. They are trying their best," the speaker said.

"We need to acknowledge that they are in fact trying to do something," he added.

Last week—a year after his administration was sworn in—Gov. Juan N. Babauta said everybody had to make sacrifices, and announced that measures would be undertaken to prevent a "bigger calamity" that could include a shutdown of government operations.

Babauta said he will propose a government-wide reorganization plan, more salary cuts and an increase in fees including the user’s fee.

The administration also initiated moves to reduce work hours by at least five hours every payroll schedule.

In a memorandum, Babauta asked government employees to voluntarily make the cut.
