FIJI TO ALLOW DUAL CITIZENSHIP

SUVA, Fiji (fijivillage.com/PINA, Jan. 22) - The Fiji Government is planning to introduce a dual citizenship policy later this year, Foreign Affairs Minister Kaliopate Tavola said.

This is to increase investment and encourage former Fiji citizens now overseas to put money into their country of birth, he said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kaliopate Tavola said many former Fiji citizens who have settled overseas are willing to invest in their country of birth if they are allowed dual citizenship.

At the moment Fiji does not allow those taking other citizenships to retain their Fiji citizenship. People taking up Fiji citizenship must renounce their former citizenship.

Cabinet will be exploring options in the next few months before deciding on the actual policy, Mr Tavola said.

Fiji has lost tens of thousands of businesspeople and highly qualified citizens to other countries, especially since the 1987 and 2000 coups. Many have become successful in their new countries but retain links with Fiji.
