COOKS SLAP TAIWAN FISHING BOAT WITH NZ$300,000 FINE

AVARUA, Cook Islands (Cook Islands News/PINA, Feb. 5) – Cook Islands marine resources officials say they are pleased with fines levied against a Taiwanese fishing boat caught fishing in the country’s waters without a license.

Navy Epati, Marine Resources Secretary, said he was pleased with the judgement of Cook Islands Chief Justice Laurie Greig.

Grieg fined the owners of the vessel, the Shine Year Maritime S.A., and its captain, Chin Shih Hsu, NZ$150,000 each, plus legal fees.

Chief Justice Greig said the forfeiture of the vessel would be too severe in this case.
