SOLOMONS PROVINCE LIFTS THREATENED LOGGING BAN

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SBIC, Feb. 23) - The threat by the Western Provincial Government to stop logging exports if it did not get a 60 percent to 40 percent share of revenues has been withdrawn.

Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza says the Solomon Islands government has agreed to pay some overdue grants to the province.

Kemakeza says government has submitted a request for $8 million from China and Taiwan for development projects in the Western Province.

The Prime Minister says the response from the respective governments has been "promising" and a confirmation of the funding is expected to be made this week.

Kemakeza says this was all the Western Provincial government needed to avert the threatened export ban.

Kemakeza says Government and the Western Provincial delegation led by the Premier Clement Base struck the deal in their negotiations at the weekend.
