IRAQI EXTRADITED TO AUSTRALIA FOR HUMAN SMUGGLING

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Feb. 25) - The first person to be extradited to Australia on human-smuggling charges has appeared in a court in the Northern Territory capital, Darwin.

The 32-year-old Iraqi national was identified as Ali Hassan Abdolamir Al Jenabi when he was extradited from Bangkok on 22 charges over the weekend. But his lawyer today told the court the suspect’s name is Achmad Hassan Jwad.

The charges relate to Jwad's alleged involvement in bringing 359 people to Australia on four boats between June 2000 and August 2001.

Jwad was remanded in custody for a three-day committal hearing in April.
