MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Feb. 28) - New Caledonia's pro-independence party, the National Kanak Socialist Liberation Front (FLNKS), has announced a tentative date for its twice delayed congress.

The new date is set for May 24 although no venue has been confirmed.

The congress was to have been held late last year, but it was twice postponed.

Last week, the FLNKS's political bureau held protracted meetings to confirm the date.

The FLNKS has been without a President since its last Congress in October 2001.

During an official visit late last year to New Caledonia, France's overseas minister, Brigitte Girardin, met several members of the FLNKS, and urged them to sort out their political differences
