MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Mar. 5) - Bougainville's weapons containment program has entered its second stage, with more than 1,800 firearms currently locked up in containers.

The commander of the logistic support force in the Australian Army, Brigadier Doug Tyers, says he is optimistic about containing all the weapons including those that were stolen last year.

He said efforts were now underway to get the Mekamui rebels to cooperate with authorities to give up their arms.

Brigadier Tyers said donor agencies were assisting to see the successful completion of the containment although Bougainville's geography and the climate had been making the task difficult.
