HONG KONG (Radio Australia, Mar. 27) - The World Health Organization says nearly 500 people in 12 countries are sick with a mysterious form of pneumonia, dubbed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Hong Kong remains hardest hit as the outbreak continues its slow spread across the world.

Mainland Chinese authorities report 31 deaths from an unusual form of pneumonia in a southern China outbreak that happened late last year and early this year.

The people may have died from severe acute respiratory syndrome, but the World Health Organization hasn't confirmed that.

But it is strongly suspected that the current outbreak started in China.
