PAPEETE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse, April 27) – Chilean airline Lan
Chile would like to unite with Air Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Tourisme to promote a
Japan-Easter Island service via French Polynesia, French daily newspaper La
Dépêche de Tahiti reports..

"Creating new synergies and not isolating oneself," is how Alan
Scotti, Lan Chile’s regional manager, described the South American carrier’s
intentions.

As for Tahiti Tourisme, French Polynesia’s tourism promotion
office, such synergy could help develop visitor markets from Frankfort, Germany
and Madrid, Spain, two destinations served by Lan Chile.

Easter Island is among cultural destinations very much
appreciated by the Japanese, particularly senior citizens.

Lan Chile carried 22,790 passengers between French Polynesia and
Santiago, Chile, via Easter Island in 2002. That was a 20 percent drop in
passenger traffic from 2001, according to French Civil Aviation Office
statistics.

Air Tahiti Nui has been operating flights to Tokyo since 1998.
It began flights to Osaka in April 2000.
