PAPEETE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse: May 5) - Eighty athletes from the
islands of Tahiti and Moorea

have signed up for a day of traditional Tahitian
sports - Tu’aro Maohi - to be held on May 10 on the beach in Tahiti’s West
Coast city of Papara.

Valérie Motahi, president of the "Te Ra’i Ura"
Association, announced the Tu’aro Maohi 2003 program on May 5.

She also announced the creation of the Federation of Traditional
Tahitian Sports, whose objective will be to revive and promote ancestral
sporting events, such as fruit-carriers’ races, javelin-throwing,
coconut-husking and stone-lifting.

The May 10 competition on the Papara beach will be open to the
public and free of charge. There also will be traditional dancing and a lunch
offering traditional Tahitian food.

"Within a period of three years, the number of athletes who
have taken up traditional Tahitian sports has tripled," Motahi said.
