CONSUMER AGENCY TO DEBUT IN PNG

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, May 8) - A new business
regulator will be launched in Papua New Guinea this week to promote economic
efficiency.

Finance and Treasury Minister Bart Philemon will launch the
Independent Consumer and Competition Commission, which will promote competition,
fair trade and protect consumer interests.

Acting general manager Thomas Abe says the ICCC will regulate
government services including telecommunications and utilities and government
declared goods like rice, fuel, coffee and butter.

The ICCC commissioner and two associates will be appointed by a
panel including the Prime Minister, Minister for Finance and Treasury, the
Opposition Leader and the Bank of PNG Governor.
