SYDNEY, Australia (ABC Online, May 31) - A long-running Papua
New Guinea newspaper is set to disappear.

The Word Publishing company has announced publication of its
weekly English-language newspaper, The Independent, will be suspended
at the end of next week.

The company said maintaining the newspaper has been increasingly
difficult, due to competition with two daily newspapers and the current economic
climate.

The church-owned company said it will now focus its energies on
its other masthead, Wantok - which is PNG's only pidgin language
newspaper.

Word Publishing is jointly owned by the four main churches in
PNG - the Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and United.
