MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, June 24) - Solomon
Islands is facing a US$4,000 fine over its last minute withdrawal of six teams
from the South Pacific Games.

The Games are scheduled to get underway in Suva, Fiji this week.
Over four thousand athletes and officials from Pacific Island countries are
expected to participate.

The Solomons’ fine came after the National Olympic Committee
of Solomon Islands announced that it was dropping five to six sports because of
financial constraints.

South Pacific Games Olympic Committee Director Of Sports Vidya
Lakhan said Solomon Islands must pay US$1,000 per sport withdrawn.

Solomon Islands said financial constraints prevented it from
being able to send a full contingent of sporting teams to the games.
