MARIANAS VISITORS BUREAU LOOKS FOR BROADER MARKET

SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, July 7) - The Marianas Visitors Authority says it has a successful Japanese slogan to market the CNMI as a prime tourist destination, but it does not have a slogan for alternative markets like the United States.

Jonas F. Ogren, managing director of MVA, said this prompted MVA, in coordination with the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s events committee, to look for a slogan in English consisting of 10 words or less that will be used for promoting the commonwealth.

"We need a powerful slogan in the English language that tells something about the CNMI...to help market the islands," Ogren told Variety.

He said the Japanese slogan whose English translation means "Three Islands, Three Paradise" is "working very well in Japan."

"But it doesn’t work in alternative markets like the U.S.," he added.

MVA and the Chamber will launch a CNMI tourism slogan contest in early August.

Kanae Quinn, chairwoman of the Chamber’s events committee, said the contest will run for one month, with the grand prize winner receiving $300.

"A maximum of five entries per person will be permitted," she said.

MVA and the Chamber, however, have not finalized the criteria for judging the entries, Ogren said.
