FIJI TROOPS READY FOR SOLOMONS DEPLOYMENT

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, July 10) - Fiji’s army says it is ready to send troops to the Solomon Islands if it is asked to do so by the Government.

Fiji is among the Pacific Forum member countries, which have agreed to send a two-thousand strong peace keeping force to the Solomon Islands.

Radio Fiji quotes military spokesman, Warrant Officer Neumi Leweni, as saying the Fiji army has 500 soldiers who were withdrawn from Southern Lebanon last December.

He said these men, on standby for possible deployment to Iraq, are also available for deployment to the Solomon Islands.
