MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, July 10) - Papua New Guinea's Speaker of Parliament, Bill Skate has signaled his intention to step down from office.

The first phase of Skate's decision to voluntarily resign as Speaker occurred on Wednesday when he tendered his resignation as Chairman of the Government coalition to Prime Minister Michael Somare.

In his resignation letter, to the Prime Minister, Skate said he is disappointed at rumors that he is involved in a move to overthrow the current PNG government.

Skate said he is aware of a campaign currently underway to move a vote of no confidence in him as Speaker.

In the letter, he has told Michael he finds this disturbing; particularly with the constant assurance of support he has received from the Prime Minister, during private discussions.
