KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, Sept. 2) — Eight lawmakers,
including Speaker Mario Gulibert, have endorsed a House Joint Resolution which
calls for the establishment of a tuna cannery in Palau’s Ngardmau state.

To expand and develop the country’s tuna industry, Palau
should encourage foreign tuna companies to establish a tuna cannery in Ngardmau,
the lawmakers said.

Citing a 1999 report by the Palau Conservation Society, the
resolution states that the average annual exports of big-eye and yellow-fin tuna
by foreign fleets based in Palau were approximately 2,500 metric tons from 1993
to 1997.

There are several long-line tuna fishing vessels from various
countries operating in Palau.

The resolution states that the establishment of a tuna cannery
in Ngardmau would reduce the need for shipping frozen sub-sashimi grade tuna to
other countries.
