MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Sept. 3) - The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands has collected and destroyed 3,850 weapons - more than were estimated to be in the community before the latest gun amnesty began.

A confidential working paper prepared before the gun amnesty began on August 1 estimated there were between 2,640 and 3,520 small arms unaccounted for in Solomon Islands.

The July 31 working paper provides details of the number and types of weapons that were surrendered in the previous amnesties, and put that total at 2,255.

That brings the total number of weapons removed from combatants and other people in the Solomons since the signing of the Townsville Peace Agreement in October 2000 to more than 6,000.
