SAVAII FOREST FIRE PUTS SAMOA TO TEST

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Oct. 16) - All of Samoa's five fire engines and all able-bodied men are fighting a rapidly worsening forest fire on Savai'i, the country's largest island.

Samoa Broadcasting Corporation says the fire is believed to have stated inland, and was then propelled westward to the coast by strong winds.

The fire is being sustained by prevailing winds and dry conditions, created by a severe drought.

A few houses close to the forest area are reported to be threatened, although none have yet been damaged.
