ACEH SEPARATIST HANGS SELF IN PRISON

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Nov. 10) - The Indonesian military says a separatist rebel commander from the province of Aceh has hanged himself in his cell.

Military spokesman Ahmad Yani Basuki says Efendi Saputra, 23, hanged himself using a nylon rope in his cell at Lhokseumawe in North Aceh on Sunday.

The man was allegedly a subdistrict commander for the Free Aceh Movement.

Indonesia has captured hundreds of suspected rebels since it launched a huge military operation in May to crush the Free Aceh Movement.

In a recent report, human rights group Amnesty International said all the detainees are at serious risk of torture.

Last week, Indonesia announced it would extend martial law and its military offensive for a further six months.
