MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Nov. 12) - The Regional Assistance Mission in Solomon Islands has begun investigations into the murders last year of two police special constables and a civilian in the country's Western Province.

Provincial police had previously blamed the killings on criminal elements from the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville, which borders the Western Province.

The province has seen an overflow effect of the Bougainville crisis and alleged gun running across the Bougainville Strait.

Since the arrival of the intervention force and a gun amnesty, Australian naval patrol boats have been monitoring the strait to prevent the illegal movement of weapons.
