SYDNEY, Australia (ABC News Online, Jan. 25) - Australian police could arrive in Bougainville within weeks after agreement between Australia and Papua New Guinea on the terms of the deployment.

A memorandum of understanding between the two countries is expected to be considered by PNG's cabinet next week before being finalized.

PNG's Foreign Minister, Sir Rabbie Namaliu says the agreement is an example of how the proposed enhanced assistance program between the two countries can be progressed, despite Parliament being adjourned for more than five months.

"We have mechanisms that will provide for the implementation of some components of the rest of the package, and in the meantime we will have legislation prepared, to be ready for the parliament when it meets in June, or even before then," he said.
