MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Jan. 26) - Toyota has officially become the world's second biggest automaker, overtaking Ford for the first time.

Toyota says it sold nearly seven million vehicles around the world last year - a 10 percent increase on the year before.

The performance was fuelled by a big jump in overseas sales.

The acceleration in sales has allowed the Japanese company to overtake Ford and become the world's second biggest automaker.

General Motors is still the top manufacturer, selling more than eight million vehicles in 2002.
