JAPAN HALTS POULTRY IMPORTS FROM CHINA

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Jan. 28) - Japan has suspended imports of poultry from China, after the Chinese government announced the deadly H-5-N-1 strain of the virus had been found in ducks in the southwestern province of Guangxi.

Japan's Farm Ministry - in a statement - said the ban would continue until it could be confirmed China had become free of the virus.

Japan also has stopped imports of poultry from Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos and Pakistan.

In all, 10 Asian nations now have reported bird flu outbreaks.
