MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Jan. 30) - In Indonesia's Papua province, 38 people have died after eating contaminated pork.

Officials say some 1,857 Papuans suffered diarrhea after eating the leftover pork.

An official says residents in Pegunungan Bintang district in the Central Highlands had eaten roast pork left over from a traditional Christmas feast.

A coordinator at the Health Crisis Center in the provincial capital, Jayapura, says the food was apparently not preserved and was contaminated with bacteria.
