PNG JOINS WORLD BAN ON TOBACCO ADVERTISING

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Feb. 26) - Papua New Guinea will join 42 countries in signing a treaty to ban tobacco advertising.

The National Executive Council has endorsed the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

The PNG Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, says the country's permanent representative at the United Nations will be authorized to sign it.

The convention will need to be ratified by the National Parliament in order for PNG to be bound by the treaty.

More than 42 countries and the European Union have signed it.
