HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Feb. 29) – The Solomon Islands cabinet has approved the development of Rob Roy Island and the southern part of Kumburo in Choiseul province for commercial activity.

Former Prime Minister and East Choiseul Member of Parliament Manasseh Sogavare says the area will be turned into an exclusive economic zone.

Mr Sogavare said the cabinet had already approved of the proposal and supplementing legislation have been approved.

He said the proposal should be brought Parliament in its next sitting for its approval.

Mr Sogavare confirmed to the people of Choiseul that members of a consortium involved in the development of the areas will be arriving in Choiseul next month to hold talks with landowners, the provincial government and the national government.

He said he hopes new developments, like the planned Taro Industrial Center, will emerge without the use of aid money.

Mr Sogavare is optimistic that with big developments happening on Choiseul, Choiseulese working in other provinces will be lured into returning home to develop their home province.

He said a good number of Choiseulese are residing in other provinces involved in commercial activities, notably in the Western province where 70 percent of business owners are from Choiseul Province.
