MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Mar. 2) - Auckland-based Tongan democracy activist Alan Taione yesterday remained detained in Tonga on charges of distributing an unlicensed newspaper after a court date clashed with a royal funeral.

The New Zealand Herald reports that while Mr Taione had planned to be back at his job in Auckland, he must now wait until Wednesday to reappear in Tonga's preliminary court.

He is facing two charges of illegally distributing the Times of Tonga newspaper, which does not have a license to distribute in Tonga.

Mr Taione's court appearance was delayed because the date clashed with that of the funeral of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV's son, Maatu Fatafehi.
