ALBIS WINS GOVERNOR’S RACE ON PALAU’S SONSOROL ISLAND

KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, Mar. 11) — Damian Bemar Albis defeated Sonsorol Gov. Laura Ierago in the recently held state elections, according to the unofficial results released by the Election Commission.

Albis received 71 votes while Ierago — Palau’s only woman state governor — garnered only 54.

William W. Carlos was elected lieutenant governor with 81 votes. His opponent Samuel M. Bemar had 44.

For state legislator-at-large, Emilio Netor got the most number of votes, 89, followed by Quintina Nestor, 75, and Annie Tirso, 69.

Two state legislator-at-large seats were up for grabs.

Voters also elected four state legislators to represent Sonsorol’s municipalities or hamlets.

For Sonsorol hamlet, Agnes Isiwini got 60 votes; Lee Pedro, 54; Leo Pedro, 49; and Donald Tirso, 28.

For Pulo Anna hamlet, Lawrence Sumor had 13 votes while Sumor Albis received 12.

The write-in candidate for Fanna hamlet, Loreta Kintoki, garnered seven votes while Valentine Tirso had five.

For Merir hamlet, Rinehart Tirso and write-in candidate Pasquana Tirso both received eight votes. Another write-in candidate, Ismael Bernardo, had 1.

Sonsorol has 143 registered voters.

The Election Commission will certify the results 15 days after the Feb. 27 elections.

Sonsorol is located 200 miles southwest of Koror.
