MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Mar. 18) - East Timor's President, Xanana Gusmao, says he will not stand for re-election in presidential elections scheduled for 2007.

Mr Gusmao has told a Portuguese news agency that he is tired and five years in office is enough.

Mr Gusmao won the country's first presidential election in April 2002 where he secured 83 percent of votes cast.

East Timor's Roman Catholic Bishop, Carlos Belo, said last month that he would consider running for president if he had strong popular support for the move and if Mr Gusmao decided not to run.
