MORE JAIL TIME FOR TOP SOLOMONS COP

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Mar. 23) - Former Solomon Islands Police Superintendent Manasseh Maelanga has been sentenced to three and a half years prison for a 2002 extortion incident, adding to the one-year jail term he received last week for separate offenses.

Maelanga was sentenced yesterday by the Magistrates Court for offenses he committed at the Point Cruz Yacht Club in 2002, including simple larceny, malicious damage, intimidation and demanding money with menaces.

Court Clerk Jimmy Hanahunu says the three and half years prison term will be served in addition to the one year jail term handed down last week for other offences he committed at the Kitano Mendana Hotel, also in 2002.

Hanahunu says Maelanga will again appear at the Magistrates Court on April 19th to face 10 charges of false pretences.

He said a date for a Preliminary Inquiry a rape charge against the former police superintendant has not yet been set.
