MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, April 22) – The new Cook Islands High Commissioner in Wellington will be Sir Thomas Davis.

The former prime minister and one of the Cook Islands' most well known citizens, will take over the role later this month.

The post has been vacant since former incumbent Wilkie Rasmussen returned to Cook Islands and became MP for Penrhyn in June 2002.

Prime Minister Dr Robert Woonton says Sir Thomas has the right pedigree for the role as he has helped shape the Cook Islands since independence in 1965.

He says having an official presence in Wellington will improve relations with countries that have a diplomatic presence in New Zealand.
