MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, April 30) - European Commission chief Romanod Prodi hailed the European Union’s enlargement this weekend as an astonishing climax to the process of reuniting Europe after the collapse of communism 15 years ago.

He says May the first is an historic day for Europe, when the EU welcomes 10 new member countries and 75 million new citizens.

On Saturday, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia will join.

It's the biggest ever enlargement since the 1957 launch of the project which was to become the EU.
