SUVA, Fiji (FijiSUN, May 2) - Family and friends in Fiji’s Nauruan community gathered yesterday to mark the opening of week-long Nauru Constitution Day.

Sports and fun activities were carried out among adults and children at the Suva foreshore.

A spokesperson for the community said that in Nauru, the celebration would be marked with feasting for a week coupled with activities like wrestling, card games, table tennis and racing competitions.

Nauru gained independence from Australia in January, 1968.

The spokesperson for the community said May 17 was the official Constitution Day but the Fiji community celebrated the occasion earlier because it was convenient and coincided with the school break.

The Nauru community in Suva alone comprises an estimated 100 people, the spokesperson said.
