HONIARA, Solomon Islands (PFnet News, May 6) – Frenchman Didier Farsy is facing new charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer while serving time in a Solomon Islands jail.

The French man is currently serving a seven-year term at Rove Prison for engaging in sex with boys while on vacation on Malaita. Police say he assaulted a Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) police officer at the prison on March 7.

Farsy, who appeared at the Central Magistrates Court on Monday to be charged with one count of assault, is reported to have assaulted the officer while the officers were handcuffing prisoners and getting them out of prison cells following discovery of shot-gun cartridges in the prison’s vicinity.

The Frenchman, who is reported to have been angry about his jail term and unhappy with conditions at Rove Prison, allegedly hit the police officer on the face.

Principal Magistrate, Nick Makin, last November sent Farsy to jail after the court found him guilty of having sex with a local boy, and performing indecent acts on others.

The crime was committed at Malu’u, North Malaita where Farsy was at that time holidaying.

Makin, when passing sentence on Farsy, said the seven-year jail term was to send a message out to all "sex tourists" to stay away from children in Solomon Islands.

It is understood that Farsy’s lawyer, Public Solicitor Ken Averre, appealed the seven-year jail term in the High Court.

The High Court is understood to have already heard the appeal case, but yet to make its decision.
