HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, May 8) - Asia Pacific Sustainable Development (APSD) in the Solomon Islands has received farm machinery and tools worth over $658,000 from the government of Japan.

The new Charge 'd Affaires of Japan, Katsuhiko Kubo, yesterday handed the tools to APSD officials in Honiara.

The machinery includes a power tiller, rice mill, crusher, hoes and picks that will be shipped to the APSD Perma Cultural Centre at Fiu Village on Malaita.

The center aims to develop organic farming methods that are applicable to the agriculture sector of Solomon Islands.

Japan hopes that such help will encourage people to involve in agricultural activities that are accessible to the rural communities and in the long term enhance the national food security.

The Government of Japan and Japan Overseas Cooperative Association jointly bought the machinery and tools.
