NUKUALOFA, Tonga (Maganti Tonga, May 19) - A Judicial Review challenging the Tongan government over last year’s amendment the country’s constitution is to be heard next month.

The case is to be heard by Chief Justice Gordon Ward at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court on June 17.

The application for a Judicial Review was filed by 152 plaintiffs on May 5, claiming that the amendment of Clause 7 relating to freedom of speech was unconstitutional.

The November constitutional amendment came after a government ban on distribution of a critical newspaper – the Taimi o Tonga – was overturned by the Supreme Court.
