WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, June 8) - Vanuatu’s snap general election will field 219 candidates for the country’s 52-member parliament.

The electoral office says 52 candidates will be running on independent tickets.

Observers say the large number of independent candidates reflects frustration with party candidates who haven’t lived up to promises.

The Union of Moderate Parties will field 31 candidates followed by the Vanuaaki Pati with 25 and the National United party with 17.

Vanuatu goes to the polls on July 6 after parliament was dissolved by the acting speaker of parliament on advice from the council of ministers.
