PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, June 30) – Pacific members of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Island Group have agreed to nominate a single candidate for the post of secretary-general.

Papua New Guinea’s John Kaputin, former Member Of Parliament from Rabaul, has been nominated by PNG while Samoa has fielded a competing candidate for the post.

PNG Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Rabbie Namaliu, after returning from the Pacific ACP group meeting in Mozambique last week, said it had been resolved to submit the name of one candidate before the ACP Council of Ministers in Brussels in November.

The leaders will meet in August in Samoa for the Pacific Islands Forum meeting to reach an agreement on the candidate.

"I am confident that we will secure an outcome that is consistent with the agreement that one name be submitted to the ACP Council of Ministers in November for election to the position," he said.

Rabbie said it was important the Pacific Group reached a consensus on the nominee and then secure the support of Africa and Caribbean countries for the nomination.
