WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, July 6) - Representatives of the Pacific Islands Forum are expected to meet the new president of French Polynesia today.

The Forum is to consider French Polynesia’s request for observer status within the Forum.

The news agency Tahitipresse says delegates will also meet the speaker and deputy speaker in the course of their six-day visit.

And, they will also meet business and union leaders, as well as religious authorities.

The territory has passed new statutes of autonomy since its former President, Gaston Flosse, met forum representatives to talk about the observer issue last March.

The representatives had been waiting for the new autonomy provisions to take hold before evaluating the bid to become an observer at the forum.
